Talking About Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) in the Classroom
The SOGI (sexual orientation and gender identity) 123 Education website is a comprehensive resource for educators aimed at increasing awareness about the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) students in the education system. This website was developed by the ARC Foundation and the SOGI Educator Network which was created by teachers in the public school system in Vancouver, Canada. The website provides information on creating LGBTQ+ inclusive school-policies, safe and supportive environments for gender and sexual minority students, and on how to incorporate LGBTQ+ issues into the K-12 curriculum. It also includes lesson plans for teaching acceptance and diversity to students of all ages. Lastly, through the website, interested teachers can connect with an online network of SOGI educators to discuss further ways to incorporate an inclusive curriculum for gender and sexual minority students in their own schools.
