A mindfulness training program for teachers
The CARE for Teachers program (Cultivating Awareness and Resilience in Education), developed by the Garrison Institute in New York in 2007, focuses on helping teachers develop the inner resources needed to maintain their own well-being and love of teaching, while helping students grow socially, emotionally and academically.
In particular, the program provides emotion skills training and mindfulness training to teachers, in the goal of promoting emotion understanding and regulation, reducing teacher stress, and bringing about greater calm and awareness into the classroom, and into relationships with students. CARE also aims to promote empathy and compassion through helping teachers develop a caring practice. The CARE for Teachers program is offered as a four-day summer retreat every year in several sites across the US. There is also the contracting option for schools, school districts or groups of teachers, where the CARE program would be offered locally as a 3 day training with a half day (optional) booster session some time later.
