The Science of Making Friends

Based on the PEERS program (Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills) developed at the University of California, Los Angeles, this book provides evidence-based advice for parents and teachers to help socially challenged teens improve their conversational skills, seek out social opportunities, and effectively respond to peer rejection and bullying, with the goal of helping teens develop healthy, successful peer relationships. Complex social interactions are broken down into explicit, concrete steps for more effective instruction. The accompanying DVD provides video demonstrations that model each skill. This program may be useful for teens who struggle to connect with peers, including youth with autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, depression, anxiety, communication disorders, etc.
