Brochure for educators receiving refugee students into their classrooms
This 6-page brochure, developed by the US Bureau of Refugee and Immigrant Assistance (BRIA), is designed for educators who are receiving children from refugee families into their classrooms. It provides information on common refugee experiences, and how these experiences may impact behavior in the classroom. It also provides some practical tips for creating a welcoming and inclusive classroom environment for refugee students, and highlights some events, skills and behaviors that are common in a US school but may be challenging for a refugee student. Ideas for resolving these challenges are provided, along with some stories from teachers and students.
This brochure is part of The Welcome to Our Schools (WtOS) program, created by the US Bureau of Refugee and Immigrant Assistance (BRIA) to support the transition of refugee children into schools of New York State, USA.
