The Courage to Teach program, developed by Parker J. Palmer in 1992 in Seattle, WA, USA, attends to the inner lives of educators with the goal of rekindling and sustaining their passion for teaching. The program is based on a book by Palmer, The Courage to Teach: Exploring the Inner Landscape of a Teacher’s Life, which is built on a premise that “good teaching cannot be reduced to technique; good teaching comes from the identity and integrity of the teacher.” (Palmer, as quoted in The Courage to Teach). Through the use of personal stories, reflections on classroom practices, poetry and safe spaces, the Courage to Teach program attends to the spiritual aspect of teaching and aims to “renew (the) heart, mind and spirit” of an educator.
