Empowering youth in the protection of their physical, mental and emotional safety: The SAFETEEN program
SAFETEEN is an assertiveness training program developed in Vancouver, BC, Canada to promote youth empowerment and safety in schools, with assertiveness viewed as a powerful alternative to aggression as well as submission. Three-hour workshops are provided by SAFETEEN trainers to secondary school boys and girls separately and focus on issues relevant to each gender. These experiential and interactive sessions aim to empower youth in the protection of their physical, mental and emotional safety. Level 1 training workshops address assertiveness, healthy relationships, physical and verbal violence. Level 2 workshops, targeted towards grades 10-12, address sexual behavior and issues, and empower students to establish and respect sexual boundaries. There is also an elementary school workshop (recommended for 7th graders) that provides pre-teens with strategies for standing up for themselves without violence.
